World of Warcraft Background 

World of Warcraft is the latest version of the Warcraft game series that started in the 1990s.  The first version of the game was Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, which was released in 1994, and introduced players to the planet Azeroth and other planets in a virtual universe.  In December of 1995, Warcraft: Tides of Darkness was released as a sequel to Orcs & Humans.  The third game in the series is Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and was released in July of 2002.  World of Warcraft, released in November 2004, is the fourth game and is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that takes place in the same universe that was introduced in Orcs & Humans and was further developed through the other games and expansions released over the past decade.

In 1994, players were first introduced to the Kingdom of Azeroth in the game Warcraft: Orcs & Humans.  The events that take place in Warcraft - Orcs & Humans have become known in Warcraft lore as either the "Great War" or the "First War."  The primary conflict is the Orc's invasion of Azeroth and the Human's struggle to protect the kingdom.  At the end of the game the Humans are driven from Azeroth, which sets up the premise for the next game.

Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness was released in December of 1995 and the story picks up six years after the first game ended.  The two races available to players in this game were again Humans and Orcs.  In the "Second War," as it would come to be called in Warcraft lore, the Orcs try to expand their land holdings.  The remaining Humans formed an alliance that was joined by Elves and Dwarves to withstand the Orc invaders.  The Alliance was able to take back Azeroth from the Orcs, which set the beginning of the story for the expansion pack Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, in which the Orcs staged another invasion of Azeroth. 

In July of 2003, in one of the most anticipated game releases ever, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos became available to players.  Once again players found themselves in the Warcraft universe, this time with four races from which to choose to play.  An even greater threat had emerged: the Burning Legion, which forces former enemies to create an alliance in order to survive.  The alliance of Humans, Elves and Orcs manage to defeat the Burning Legion's forces.  After the defeat, in the expansion pack Warcraft III - The Frozen Throne, the alliances crumble and the original conflicts arise.

The previous games and expansion packs developed the universe that is the stage for World of Warcraft and its two expansion packs, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.  Players can play as any of a number of races and explore the Warcraft universe.  There are many tasks and crusades that players can go on as their characters.  Players work to rise through levels, earn gold and amass items such as weaponry and armament.  There are several pivotal characters and settings from previous games that appear in World of Warcraft. To date, more than 11 million people worldwide have monthly subscriptions to the game making it the world's largest massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
