World of Warcraft Terminology
Like
many other role-playing games, World of Warcraft has many of its own
acronyms and terminology. Below is a quick list of some basic terms
you will commonly hear while playing WoW.
Aggro – This means that the monsters are
angry with you and that you have activated them to attack; it is
when the monsters are in motion trying to reach and attack you.

Disenchanting – Disenchanting
is the act of transforming an item back to its magical elements for
a later date. Essentially, disenchanting is doing the opposite of
enchanting. Enchanting requires certain ingredients or materials
for enhancing gear. Disenchanting breaks down those ingredients
into separate entities. By doing this you will have more elements to
worth with and make various other enchanted items at will.
Disenchanting can only be done by Enchants, which is the only class
equipped with this ability. Selling disenchanted materials can
prove to be very profitable.
Drops – These are items you
can loot, or obtain possession of, from the corpses of enemy NPCs (Non-Player
Characters).
Farming – This means that you
have either vanquished a specific set of enemies or completed a task
to obtain a specific item such as gold, quest requirements or
cloth. A raid on “farm status” means that your guild should be
aptly skilled to complete an entire raid without any major errors.
This creates an event specifically for obtaining pieces of loot.
Gear – Clothing, armor and
weapons are considered to be gear. Gear is basically anything you
can carry, wear or use on the battlegrounds. This is a term for a
player’s inventory, quest items, potions or a character’s talents or
abilities.
Griefing – When another player
consistently disrupts your intent to play by either attacking you or
by other distracting means it is called griefing. The victim then
becomes incapable of completing their game playing goal in a timely
manner.
Grinding – This is when a
character remains in the same area to gain experience points by
repetitively killing the same types of monsters for long periods of
time or to obtain gold by killing mobs.
Guild – A collection of
players within the same faction and same server who belong to a
large collective is referred to as a guild. Guilds are not usually
created for combative reasons. They are usually formed for social
orientation. Guild members are free to chat amongst themselves on
their own private channel.
Multi-Zoning – When you take
your character to other starting points in your area for the purpose
of completing more quests you are multi-zoning. Doing this will
optimize the amount of quests available to you, helping you
character level.
Noob, Newb, n00b or noobie – A
derogatory term indicating the inexperience of someone or the title
of a player who is new to a game, never having played the game
before. These terms are also used to describe someone who has not
won any duels or constantly makes mistakes causing a negative effect
on their game playing reputation.
NPC – Non-Player
Character. This is a character not being played by a person;
it's a computer player. NPCs are also referred to as "bots," which
are computer programs created for doing specific tasks.
Power Leveling – This is a
process used to level a character as quickly as possible by
maximizing quest experience points gained with the least amount of
play time.
Re-Spawn – A monster that has
been killed, yet has been created, or spawned, again is known as a
re-spawn.
